Problems with the TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) can cause multiple problems. Some of these problems include jaw pain, ear pain ,neck pain, headaches, pain with chewing or talking, jaw popping, and difficulty sleeping. These problems can significantly affect daily functional activities and work. Our therapists are trained to assess each symptom and to develop treatment plans specific to each patient’s problems.
Therapy may include use of modalities including heat, ice, ultrasound, or electric stimulation. Sometimes manual therapy techniques of joint mobilization or massage are also needed. Exercise education and training as well as relaxation techniques are also provided to help with improving daily function and symptom reduction. Lifestyle, posture, and risk factors are also elements that will be addressed by therapists to ensure the best long-term outcome.
